I always loved music. My mother was supportive so she said to pick an instrument I would like to learn, and she’d get it for me. I chose the accordian. Now, no offense to any accordian players out there, but it’s definitely not a “chick magnet” (but neither was I, so…no harm, no foul I guess). My sister chose the guitar, took a couple lessons and gave up. I grabbed her lesson book, learned the barcodes and practiced those until I finally got it, and to round out my studies, I bought some “Beatles Books”. For those who need an explanation as to what I mean by that phrase, you can pick up a thick book of sheet music and it displays not only the words, linear music and chord names, but also has finger placement. That’s how I learned to play music. The Beatles were my favorite group, and I had the 2 volume set of all the songs from the Beatles.
In case you couldn’t guess, I’m a baby-boomer. I was 17 when a bunch of bands played an outside event on a few acres of farmland belonging to Max Yasgar in upstate New York. It brought in a crowd of over a half-million people, and the rest is history. Jimi Hendrix played a concert a couple weeks prior to that in Miami, Florida and I was in a school play when a group of my buddies came back stage telling me they were going to New York for the three day festival of Peace and Love after the play and invited me along. Sorry, no happy ending here, I turned down a trip to Woodstock which wouldn’t have cost me a dime. But…WHO KNEW?!?
Anyway, I found out there’s hope for those who shared those young boomer years with me that never learned how to play the guitar but always wanted to. It’s not too late. You might be thinking you’re too old, or you don’t know any of the new songs, or perhaps don’t really like them, and no one’s teaching the old stuff anymore. It’s called “Adult Guitar Lessons”.
